On December 12, Professor Yang Ming from the school of Computer Science and Technology was invited to the Honors College to give a lecture on artificial intelligence for students from the Grade 2018 science class. Cao Haitao, the vice president of Honors College, presided over the lecture.

Professor Yang is the doctoral supervisor of statistical learning and application under NNU’s first-level discipline of statistics, the director of the institute of intelligent information processing of NNU. He mainly researches on AI, machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition and application.
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Yang introduced the origin of AI and cited several examples to explain the definition and connotation of it. Then, he employed the example of “AlphaGo” to explain the development of AI’s learning process in detail, which is divided into reasoning stage, knowledge stage and machine learning stage. Besides, with the development of the era, the development of AI has been more and more rapid. Finally, Professor Yang briefly introduced the combination of AI and education industry, manufacturing industry, medical industry and so on, reflecting the leapfrog progress which AI could bring to traditional industries. He also emphasized the importance of cultivating high-quality talents which are proficient in AI and encouraged students to develop interest in AI.
In the end, President Cao pointed out in his concluding speech that AI has great potential for development in the future and encouraged students interested in AI to have a talk with Professor Yang after the lecture.
