At 4:30 pm, October 12th, invited by Honors College, professor Luo Dongqing who is a PhD tutor at the School of Liberal Arts gave a lecture entitled “Wisdom of Literature” to Honors College students in classroom 310 in Xue Hai building.
At the beginning of the lecture, professor Luo explained the word “wisdom” to students, conveying that “wisdom” is not “intelligence” in the general sense but similar to knowledge, feeling and meaning in western humanity. Different from natural sciences, the wisdom of literature is unique, mainly involving "inspiration" and "ingenuity" and "deepening".
When talking about “inspiration”, professor Luo compared successful literary work to the nerve ending of the era which has extreme sensitivity and insight. Developing from sensitivity to inspiration, from sensibility to rationality, it requires accumulation of social experience as well as smart sensibility and perspective insight. Only by doing more reading and experiencing the colorful social life, can students slowly develop inspiration and understand the charm of literature.
Professor Luo pointed it out that ingenuity is a unique and non-logical way of thinking about literature. Took "Journey to the West" as an example, professor Luo elaborated that although literature is full of imaginary fiction. It also has a reasonable inference system, which enables readers to push back from the conclusions to the premise. Therefore, he suggested everyone not to think in a simple logical way but to deeply interpret humanity.
Near the ending of the lecture, professor Luo put forward "myth" according to the characteristics of literature. Words in literature are different from the direct language which are daily used. Words in literature are often given indescribable meanings in some certain situations that means speaking ineffable words. To answer students’ questions, professor Luo said, metaphor, as a kind of rhetoric, is often erased by life. Different fields all pay attention to rhetoric and art of speech, which requires students to explore the essence of sentences.
In addition, regarding to artificial intelligence which is highly controversial nowadays, professor Luo also made it clear that intelligence cannot surpass the human world, especially in literature. A smart machine may have emotions. However, it is absolutely impossible for it to own inspiration. What students need to do is to maintain a sense of crisis. By reading a large number of literary works, people can find a foundation between people and intelligence, touching the wisdom of literature, and adhering to the purity of human nature.
The whole lecture was interesting for professor Luo citing and talking about it in a simple way, telling the indispensable role of literature contemporarily. Guided by professor Luo, Honors College students will do extensive reading and gain a deep understanding of the true connotation and wisdom of literature.
