At 2 PM on August 27, the youth story sharing session, an important part of the 2019 freshman selection summer camp of the Honors College, was held in the Lecture Hall of Xuehai Building. In this session, three outstanding students of the college, Qiu Yihan, Liang Hong and Yao Shuai, were invited to share their college study and life with the freshmen.
The first one to share was Qiu Yihan, an arts class student of the Grade 2014 of the Honors College. She is now studying Asian studies in Lund University, Sweden. At first, Qiu briefly introduced her personal information, including her major and hobbies. Then, she had an in-depth communication with students on the topic of studying abroad. In the question and answer session, some students raised the question of "how to learn English well". According to Qiu, the key to learning English well is to develop interest in English and gradually build up a sense of English language by watching American TV series and reading English novels. In addition, speaking English boldly and initiatively and creating a corresponding language environment can also help to improve English. Later, she answered a series of questions such as "how to adapt to the life of studying abroad" and "whether students should write for their own interests or academic purposes". She answered them with great humor and wit, which won her the applause of the freshmen.
Then, Liang Hong, the monitor of the science and engineering class of Grade 2016 and the secretary of the student party branch, shared her thoughts with the freshmen. With the theme of "Choosing the Impossible", Liang Hong mainly focused on university life and discussed why university is an important transitional period in life from three perspectives. In her opinion, during the college, students will complete a transition from school to society, from individual to collective and from dependence to independence. In this process, individuals will constantly improve themselves and complete transformation. After that, she introduced ways to realizing the college life one dreams of based on her own experiences. During the question and answer session, Liang gave some suggestions to the confused freshmen on "should a student join the clubs or the student union?"
Finally, Yao Shuai, a student from the engineering class of Grade 2013 of the college, gave a speech. As an excellent student who had been recommended for postgraduate study in Southeast University to directly study for doctor's degree, Yao explained the differences between university life and high school life in a simple way. He said that during college, the knowledge you get from class is more specialized and directly connected to society. Besides, class is only the tip of the iceberg, while the extracurricular is an actual new world. He also introduced some scientific research competitions in university, including Challenge Cup, physics competition, mathematical competition in modeling, etc. By giving examples, Yao helped the freshmen to have an understanding of the seemingly "superior" scientific research competitions and initially develop academic awareness.
So far, the youth story sharing session was successfully concluded. Through this activity, the freshmen have gained a better understanding of college life, and they will surely follow the examples of outstanding seniors to start a brand new college career.
