On the afternoon of May 17th, the final of "Cheese Q Cup" the fifth English Talent Competition Speech Contest of the Honors College was held in the west lecture hall of the library. After the preliminary selection, 13 contestants stood out. Each of them employed their unique talent to present a fantastic speech competition for the judges, guests and students, showing the presence of the college’s students.
Chen Zhen, professor of the School of Public Administration, Zhu Tingting and Li Shuguang, professors of the School of Foreign Languages, Cai Neng, deputy director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Department were invited as judges in the competition. In addition, Wang Xinwen, secretary of the party committee of the Honors College, Qian Zaijian, dean of the college, Zhi Jing, deputy secretary of the party committee and vice dean of the college, as well as some teachers and students also attended the event.
Qian Yi, a Grade 2015 student who has been admitted to Harvard University, served as the host. She started the competition with her fluent oral English. At the beginning of the competition, President Qian Zaijian delivered a speech. Explaining the purpose of holding this competition, he emphasized the importance the college has attached to English learning in talent training. At the same time of looking back on the remarkable achievements of the students in the past, he also showed great expectations for the future development of the students at present. Cai Jiachen, a Grade 2015 student who will study in Yale University, also shared her experience of winning the competition. She said that English learning should not be limited to school. Instead, students should learn English in life and experience life in English.
The competition was divided into three parts: keynote speech, English-Chinese translation and questions from the judges. The content was rich and colorful, which not only examined the contestants' English ability from all aspects, but also guided students to pay attention to the present and have the whole world in view. Natural and graceful, the contestants clearly and calmly expressed their unique opinions and tactfully answered the teacher's questions. Yang Luyi rationally analyzed whether mobile phones should be used in the classroom from several aspects. Xu Ke combined with her own experience and affectionately recalled the truth her parents had taught her. Liu Zhen neatly illustrated our connections to the world. Zhang Zixin enthusiastically called on the students to jump out of the comfort zone and go on to the unknown field of struggle…… Although the Chinese-English translation was extremely difficult, the contestants still completed the translation excellently with their solid basic skills and ingenious thinking. Their excellent performance won the applause from the judges and the audience. After a fierce competition, the results were finally out. Three students, Tian Jiaqi, Yang Cheng and Zhang Yunge, won the first three places in the speech contest.
Finally, teacher Li Shuguang commented on the entire competition. On the one hand, he highly praised the excellent performance of the contestants and their courage to face the challenge. On the other hand, he also gave detailed instructions on the problems exposed in the speech. He pointed out that the passion and logic of the students still need to be strengthened, and the differences between Chinese and English expressions should be paid special attention to in English-Chinese translation. He hoped that students could be able to taste the western culture in every sentence in the process of learning English.
With the singing of Youth, the English Talent Competition came to a successful end. From the written competition to the speech contest, the college’s students actively participated in and demonstrated themselves. Besides, they exercised their English listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities, and stimulated their enthusiasm for learning English. The students are expected to further learn English, cultivate an international perspective and strive to become leaders in the future.
