On the November 15 afternoon, the Fulbright scholars Connie Shemo who comes from Plattsburgh State University gave an academic lecture on the 315 lecture hall of Xuehai building.Professor Connie is now visiting Shanghai University. The theme of the lecture is ‘The First Chinese Women Physicians Educated in the United States: Why Have They Been Forgotten, and What Can They Teach us Today?’,which is the introduction of the first batch of Chinese female doctors Shi Meiyu and Kang Cheng's life.
The presenter first raised two questions ‘How we remember a certain historical figure and what created a celebrity?’ The professor did not answer directly, but firstly introduced the introduction of the two female doctors. She pointed out that in fact their backgrounds are not extraordinary birth. The advanced attitude of the family has given the two girls adequate room for development so that they have received medical education and become ‘a model for women in the new era of China’ just as Liang Qichao praised. When Shi Meiyu and Kang Cheng returned from studying at the University of Michigan, they went to hospitals in China and even sold their jewelries to get enough money. Their dedication and independence have fully proved women's capabilities to the people of the world. In fact, they enjoyed very high prestige at that time in China and the United States. Roosevelt, the president of the United States had personally met them. But they are now gradually forgotten by people.
