Six leaders were invited to act as judges, and they were Wang Yongxiang, Wang Daping, Bai Li, Tian Haihong, Qian Zaixian and Cao Haitao. The competition was hosted by Wu Lingzi.
The final match consisted of three parts: a three-minute-limited keynote speech, Chinese-English translation and English-Chinese translation (each within one minute) and the judges would pose questions based on the performance of participants. Of all the eleven competitors, Huo Chen was the first one to give her speech, and her topic was “Should every child receive bilingual education?” From her perspective, the answer was definitely yes because receiving bilingual education not only helps a child master more language skills, but also develops intelligence and broadens their horizon. Afterwards, other players also gave their speeches lively and wonderfully. Among them, speeches given by Zhao Danni and Qiu Yihan were the most impressive. The topic of Zhao Danni was “the importance of knowing oneself”. She stressed her center idea from the following three aspects: study, extracurricular extension and sports entertainment. In the second part, her accurate and fluent translation won praise from all the judges. In the third part, she shared her experience in improving the ability to translate with all the audience. Another player with excellent performance was Qiu Yihan, who focused on “What I have learned from my years at university?” She recalled the expectation from her parents and the activities she had experienced during the past years in the university, which all helped her make progress. Finally, Zhao Dani, Weng Xiaoxiao and Qiu Yihan won the top three. In the end of the competition, Wang Yongxiang remarked on students’ performance. He praised the strong ability presented by all the participants in oral English. Then he gave students some specific suggestions to further improve their English.
This competition provided a chance for students to exercise their ability in giving speeches as well as motivated them to learn English. It was also a platform to show their competence in English and to promote the idea held by the Honors College to cultivate students with international horizon.
