On the afternoon of December 16th, Honors College held the eighth 2016 Fulbright program short-term expert lecture in 315 auditorium of Xuehai Building. Professor Jeannette W.Cockroft delivered the lecture on the theme of “American college experience”.
The professor started in a humorous style to generalize the contents of the lecture. It’s about three main aspects, namely the experience of American undergraduates studying in china, the difference between Chinese and American college students and how Chinese undergraduates study abroad in the future. He said, in America, studying is a free choice for students to choose where to study, what to major in and which professor on their own. However, they also need to respond to the advantage and disadvantage of their choice. Besides, American class is very active where professors impart not only knowledge, but also how to think, study and to form excellent quality. During the break, students from around the world would discuss politics, religion and social focus fiercely because everyone can express their opinions freely. In the American college, the atmosphere of studying is deeper and freer in that whoever has which background and major can be admitted to the university.
When it came to the advice of studying abroad, Jeannette emphasized strongly that the students should be clear about the goal of learning and what they want. In addition, if they are trapped by their choice, they should be optimistic about obstacles instead of being depressed. What’s more, professor suggested that we need to develop our interest and make more friends. Last but not least, he hoped that the students can take advantage of the resource maximally to make the future smoother.
After the lecture, a student questioned about the real value of studying abroad and professor answered with broadening the eyesight, making more friends and so on. On balance, studying abroad is an excellent opportunity to recognize the world.
Through the lecture, students learnt more about the condition of American undergraduates and what to concern about to study abroad. The lecture played a significant role in the future learning of the students.
