On the afternoon of 12th of December, the fifth Fulbright lecture was successfully held in the 315 lecture room in xuehai teaching building, Dr. Jonathan Ochshorn, who comes from the USA, addressed a wonderful lecture on ‘Governmental Intervention vs. Architectural Idealism’ to Honors College students.
The professor pointed out that Governmental Intervention means that in the capitalism democracy, the government forced owners of private assets to take actions under the peaceful background.'Architectural idealism' means that human beings concern about the earth and the society such as their voluntary deeds to solve 'green house'. As usual, the two exist in a typical mode. First, when people encounter a severe crisis such as earthquake, they began to be aware of the ponderance of the problem. Second, the politicians debated on this problem. Third, they made decision according to the expense and benefit. Then, the professor took conflagration as an example. The houses were mostly made of wood so they were easy to cause a fire in the last century. To save the cost and win the competition, the land agents always refused to use bricks to build houses. But with the more frequent occurrence of conflagration, the government had to make legislation to interfere. Besides, the professor also recommended two books separately named Hannover Principle and USGBC LEED Guidelines to help the students understand more deeply and know more about this issue.
After the lecture, the students wondered which Chinese buildings impressed the professor most and the professor spoke highly of the CCTV Headquarter and the Bird's Nest. Some students talked with the professor about Trump and the professor expressed his opinions of the election.
This lecture not only improved students' English abilities , but also made students know more about the relation of western capitalism democracy to architecture. In addition, the lecture expanded students' horizon and showed the international concept of Honors College.
