At 2 p.m. of December 2nd, Honors College held the fourth Fulbright lecture this semester in 315 auditorium of Xuehai Building. Professor Jim Freedman gave a lecture on how to be a leader under multicultural background.
After a brief introduction given by Lu Huiwen, Professor Jim Freedom gave students an official speech. He started from cultural differences, talking about current multicultural background. Then he got down to the business by introducing some interesting differences in diets. The atmosphere was relaxing and pleasant.
Professor pointed out that the cultural diversity would bring about misunderstandings and contradictions, which would result in a challenge to civilization. In this regard, he came up with a new idea “DIY”——do it yourself. From his point of view, people have different understandings of leadership due to cultural differences. At the same time, he displayed some popular leadership models to the students. What’s more, Professor mentioned that as a leader, his liberty would be inversely proportionate to power. It would be much more difficult if anyone wants to be a qualified leader. He has to take everything that hasn’t been done into consideration instead of something he is able to do.
Besides, through some interactive games, Professor explained that people usually bear the general impression in mind rather than the details, which should be paid attention to and be applied by leaders. Professor emphasized that leaders must keep improving themselves and cooperators when faced with multicultural challenges. They should have a dream as well to inspire both themselves and their teams. During the next Q&A sessions, students actively raised their questions and had a further discussion about leadership with Professor.
This lecture was informative and helped students broaden their horizons. Most students said they would like to have further communications with Professor and be more involved in Fulbright lectures.(Translated by Ji Juanyu)
